Weight loss can be achieved in many ways. Not all of them are equally efficient though! Unfortunately, most people are too quick to follow the new fad diets that pop up every week. Most of these diets result in weight loss that lasts just a couple of weeks and after a while the dieter usually puts on even more weight than before the diet started. The reason for that is deprivation. When we deprive our body of certain food categories, it goes into starvation mode. This is a survival mechanism that was very useful when our ape-like ancestors often went days without eating due to frost or unsuccessful hunts (or both). Nowadays we might have grocery stores full of food, but if you deprive your body of carbohydrates or fat, it will still go into starvation mode, feeling that something is going terribly wrong. And it is! By excluding whole food groups from your diet, you are causing great damage to your metabolism and can also cause a great variety of deficiencies.
Now that we have scared enough to be sure that you won’t try any of those idiotic diets, we need to give you an alternative, right? And we will. It is called juicing and all you need as a juicer or decent blender and fresh produce. The basic idea behind juicing is that a glass full of juice can pack a much greater volume of fruits and vegetables than you could consume, if you ate them hole. For example, in a large glass of juice you can fit five strawberries, a banana, an avocado, half a mango, half a cup of blueberries and a handful of fresh spinach. How likely are you to eat all this goodness separately? It might seem that such a glass of juice packs a lot of calories, but this is not the case. When you calculate the calories that you are consuming, you should always keep in might how many nutrients you get from every food. For example a whiskey can give you double the calories of a fruit juice and none of the nutrients.
The juice fast (if you need it)
There is no hard and fast rule on how to incorporate juicing into your lifestyle. If you have been feeding with junk food for quite a while though, you might want to start with a two or three day juice fast. This means consuming nothing but fruit juices and water for a couple of days. This will give your body some much needed time to detox and get rid of all the waste that has been accumulating in your intestines. Your spleen and liver will thank you as well. Some people like to stick to ingredients with high antioxidant content for those days, like berries, spinach and kale, and will leave heavier fruit for later but do what suits you best.
Two juices every day
Start your day with a cup of warm water with lemon. You can add honey or stevia as a sweetener, if you want. This will kick start your metabolic functions and cleanse your liver. You will immediately feel alert and toned and you won’t need a coffee! After that, you can drink the first juice of the day. The richer, the better. Feel free to add any fruits and vegetables that you like, without restricting yourself. Peaches, apples, pears, oranges, cherries, plums, cucumbers, avocados, bananas, spinach, kale, clementines, apricots, watermelon, honeydew re all excellent choices. Organic is best, but if you cannot afford it, then make sure to wash your greens well or even better let them soak in a water-apple cider vinegar solution for half an hour. This will get rid of any dirt and pesticide residues.
In the evening, preferably after your exercise or half an hour before, you can have a second large juice with similar ingredients. You can add hemp or maca raw powders for extra protein and energy or spirulina, to boost your micronutrients intake. If you have a good juicer, adding a wheat grass shot will also help your body detox and energize. These two juices per day will keep you feeling full for a long period of time, which means no snacking in between meals. And because they fuel your body with tons of nutrients, you won’t feel weak or sluggish, meaning no need for fattening, caffeinated energy drinks! And as a bonus, your hair, skin and nails will look better than ever in just a few weeks time!
