With the busy lives that we lead, it is a small miracle when we manage to get enough sleep, to rest properly. And if you are anything like the average office employee, your diet is not much better either. Tons of coffee, quick processed lunched in front of a computer screen and maybe an energy drink for those days that are filled with deadlines… No wonder that your skin is not doing you any favors! Add to these factors the exposure of your eyes to the screen the whole day, and you can understand why those black circles and eye bags seem to be here to stay.

Do not despair though! There are many things that you can do, to help your skin rest and look refreshed. Now, don’t expect quick fixes. We will give you those too, but if you want long term results, you will need to do some long term lifestyle changes as well. Keep in mind however that black circles are to an extend attributed to genetic factors, so if you had them since you were a child, chances are that make up is the answer for you. More on that, later.

Drink plenty of water

That’s right! We know that you keep reading this advise in beauty and health articles over and over again and there is good reason for it. Our bodies consist of more than 70 percent water and if you are dehydrated, you damage your skin first. You see, the body will use the water that it still has to support vital organs, like the heart, brain and kidneys. Skin is considered of secondary importance and that is why it is the first to suffer from dehydration. If you drink enough water, you will see that your skin will look and feel more elastic and softer. Definitely and improvement! Hydration will also delay the appearance of those thin lines around your eyes, that only make black circles look worse and you older.

Stay away from salt

Salt causes water retention. This means that the black circles under your eyes will be accompanied by puffy bags as well. Not very attractive, right? Try to stay away from all processed snacks with added salt, like chips, nachos, fries, burgers, salted nuts. And if you think we just cut out all your drink munches, you are wrong. You can always enjoy cucumber and carrot sticks and olives or unsalted mixed nuts. When cooking, get a low sodium alternative or cut the amount of salt in half. At first foods might seem blunt, but then you will get used to the taste and actually discover the real taste of things, that was covered by salt.

Get enough sleep

This can mean different things for different people. Some feel well-rested with six hours while others need eight and a half, plus a little nap. Listen to your body and respect its needs for sleep. Even if you are busy at work, you can get more sleep by skipping that late night movie or the visit to the pub during work days. If your eyes are puffy when you wake up in the morning, you can use two cold slices of cucumber or two teaspoons that you will keep in the fridge, and put them under your eyes for a couple of minutes. Keep in mind that dark circles are often a sign of bad circulation, so you might want to consider to spend 15-30 minutes every day with your legs somewhat elevated.

Eat your greens

Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants. Many vitamins in them, like vitamin A, are great for your eyes and vitamins E and C are great for your skin, as well as hair and nails. Carrots, olive oil, berries, citrus fruits, coconut water, dark leafy greens are all great sources of nutrients that will help your skin recover faster after a late night out (or working over-hours at the office). They will also help repair the damage done by air conditioning and electromagnetic waves, that makes your skin look dull and dry.

Use concealer

We left this one for the end because it is not a solution to the problem, but a way to mask the symptom. Still, for people with a chronic dark circles issue, it is often the only solution. Make sure to select your concealer with the help of a specialist, like a dermatologist or make up artist. Depending on the tone of your skin, you might need one with a yellow, green or pinkish shade, that will blend with your circles and make them disappear.

And remember, circles or not, you are beautiful just the way you are!
