People used to think that acne is a problem that only teenagers face.
Dermatologists around the world though can assure you that acne can strike at any age. Unfortunately, women are more unlucky than men, as their hormonal fluctuations are often a trigger for acne episodes. This does not mean however that you cannot take some preventative measures, to reduce the appearance of annoying pimples and spots. And the best part is that you won’t have to rely on harsh cleansers, that are filled with artificial ingredients. All you need to get rid of acne can be found in your kitchen! With a proper, clean diet, you will get a skin that looks and feels clean, bright and elastic. But first things first!
In order to start a new, skin-healthy diet, you need first to throw away all the foods that have been bad for your skin and health. Anything processed must go. We know you hate us for saying that, but unfortunately, all those artificial ingredients are not doing your body any good. Here is a list of things that most likely are in your fridge and cupboards and need to go: soda, pizza and other frozen, processed meals, chips, candy, ready-made cake, white breads and white pasta products and of course sugar. We know it sounds horrible right now, but it will all be worth it.
You know that nutrition saying, that whatever goes bad is good for you and whatever doesn’t go bad is bad for you? It is true. This is why you need to stockpile your fridge and pantry with fresh fruits and vegetables. And if you were worried about where you are going to get your sugar from, fruit is the answer! Fructose, the carbohydrate found in fruit, can satisfy your sweet tooth, without aggravating your skin issues. The reason is that your body can recognize and metabolize it steadily and you won’t suffer from sugar spikes. That’s an added bonus if you have type 2 diabetes issues as well! So buy apples, oranges, pears, mangoes, avocados, blueberries, raspberries, watermelons, cantaloups, bananas, peaches, prunes, cherries… There is a huge variety and each one of them offers different vitamins that will nurture your skin. When it comes to vegetables, dark leafy greens, carrots, cucumbers, cauliflower, broccoli, radishes, eggplants and peppers are some great choices. You can make salads with them and use them in soups and stir fries. Your skin will be thankful! Vegetables cut in sticks are also a great healthy snack that you can pack and take with you at work or at the gym.
Reduce dairy and keep it organic
Unfortunately, the dairy industry uses all sorts of chemicals in order to increase production and profit. This means that dairy cows are often injected with growth hormones and antibiotics, to combat infections. These hormones are interfering with your own. In fact researchers believe that consumption of dairy might have something to do with the early onset of puberty in girls the last few years. Remember what we said, that acne is often hormone-related? Now imagine how confusing it is to your body, when you incorporate more hormones through your food. If you want to consume dairy, make sure they are organic. This way not only do you avoid hormones, but also pesticide and insecticide residues that are transferred through the animal fodder to the animal’s secretions, milk included. As you can understand, acne and dangerous chemicals are not a good combination!
Drinking plenty of water and fruit juices
As we said, soda is out of the question if you want to get rid of acne for good. Drink tons of water instead, that helps cleanse out your system from toxins. If you find water boring, try adding a slice of lemon or cucumber, some raspberries or fresh mint leaves. Fruit smoothies that are made with water, coconut water or dairy-free milk substitutes, like almond milk, are a great alternative.
Of course washing your hands and keeping devices such as your mobile phone clean will help prevent bacteria from triggering acne episodes. You might still get the occasional spot “those” days of the month, but you will never have to deal with acne again, if you follow these simple guidelines. Added bonus: you will feel and look much healthier in general and your waistline will thank you too!
